Well, you fix one thing something new pops ups not a moment later...
It just starting doing this, when I go to start it, I turn the key to the "start" position and it does nothing, no battery drain, no click, nothing. If I kind of twist the key-cylinder it will turn over like it should. Or if I let off a little and then turn it again it will start.
It seems to me that the switch that engages the starter is going bad, how do I go about replacing this in the column? Any other ideas as to what this could be?
The switch sits on the top of the column. You have to drop the column to the seat, or just remove the column from the car. Sounds much worse than it is. I would agree with your guess based on the description of the problem. You could test the wire at the starter to make sure.
Jack71: When you say it sits on "top" of the column, is it actually on the outside? I don't mind dropping the column it's not difficult at all. I blew the light out on my test-light when it touched the + side on the Crane LX-92 coil... , but I will test that to make sure this weekend. EDIT: This is a tilt-tele steering column, does that make a difference?
Evil_Grim: I don't "think" it is the neutral safety switch as it doesn't matter if I move the shifter around. It "feels" as if its in the column (have to get out my witching sticks to be sure.. )
Look around the passenger side valve cover near the rear for a 6 wire plug that has leads going down to the starter. It should have been a weatherpack connector but I don't think they had been invented yet...
Here's what mine looked like, I just cut it out and soldiered the wires together for now.

Thanks in advance!
I got one for ya. I had a similar situtation last year on my 86 IROC Camaro. Sometimes it would sometimes it wouldn't. Worse whem hot. It turned out to be the starter the brushes were worn to the point sometimes they'd make contact sometimes they wouldn't. So while I agree with those suggesting checking the switch first don't be frustrated if it isn't the switch.
