PAW (used to have multi-page advertisement in Car Craft, Hot rod Etc.), Northern Auto Warehouse, Jegs, and Summitt have good complete kits.

JC Whitney has a couple of videos you might be interested in. One is on basic rebuild of a SBC. The second one is almost a Part II of the first and is on hi-performance considerations when building a SBC. Both videos assume you have other reference materials available to you for spec's for your particular application.

Have a look at Scroggins-Dickey for rotating assemblies and such.

Eagel offers a 383 balanced rotating assembly for under $1,000. You just need to clearence the block a little bit in a couple of lower cyl walls and oil pan rail plus either clearence the rod bolts or buy a small base circle cam. All in all it will very close in price to buying a rebuild kit and having it balanced.

Also check out www.ohiocrank.com, they some cheap stroker kits too.

I'm looking at the kits at Northern now. You can upgrade to name brand parts and still get a decent deal. You have to start with their $159.99 masterkit which has a lot of the "white box" builder parts in it. I'm thinking of going with .020 over speed pro hyper pistons (+$20) Speed Pro molt plasma file fit rings(+86) clevite 77 P brg's (+$6) keeping the Melling 55 pump in the kit, adding a steel pump shaft($7). It comes with a mellow stock cam but you can upgrade to several name brand cams. Probably run about $300 for what I want, not bad. Machining cost will be around $700-800 so I hope to get what I want done for under $1,500. I already have new WP Torquers that I ported and polished ready to go on along with a Comp 260H cam. Should be a nice street motor for my setup.
