Default Window problems

Did a search on window problems, but didn't find anything like this one.

The Dside window on my 82 is really loose. When the door is open and the window is not fully run up, you can grab the window and move it back and forth and up and down freely. Checked the gear on the regulator and it appears to be OK. The motor runs the window up and down but can't get it to go all the way up, stops about 1/4 inch short. Readjusted the window as per the assy manual and shop manual but since it is so loose it does not stay in adjustment.

Does this sound like it needs a new regulator setup or is there something else I am not checking? Sorry about the long post and thanks for any suggestions.

Each window has anti rattle cushions which hold the window steady when it is not fully extended up or down. They are located on the top inside of the door frame at the front and rear of the window. They are black rubber with a velcro like material covering them. They should help. When the window is fully up the weatherstrip should hold it tight.

If your window has that much play up and down I would think that you need to check the channel that the window sits in. The glass should be firmly attached to the channel with screws front and back. The channel should be attached to the regulator in 2 places with a slliding cam. Should be very little play in either.

I would get an Assembly Manual or find some pictures in some of the parts catalogs. It appears that you have to tighten down all your mechanisms as there should be very little movement in the window

Also check the rolers in the track. Found one of mine broken last week. Pin/bolt was still attatched to the window but the roller was busted and lying at the bottom of the track.

There is a roller that fits in the front of the glass and rides in the window channel. I have found several cars where this roller(it goes through the glass) has unscrewed itself and the window will move back and forth without it. Be carful that the window does not hit the front of the weather strip retainer.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will rip the door apart again tonight and check out the rollers. The anti-rattle cushions are holding the window OK. What better way to spend another rainy night than wrenching on the Vette.
