I would be curious to hear what RPM you are running your 383's to.
I just pulled my motor after ten years of excellent service - actually nothing is wrong with it, but I'm installing a TKO 600 and didn't want to wrestle with the Rubik's Cube install, since my crossmember is not removable.
I have a 355 putting out 407hp at the flywheel. The motor was extremely well built by a local engine builder and I consistenly wind it up to 7000 RPM. I just brought the motor back to the same guy, 10 years later, and I'm thinking about taking it up to a 383. I'll miss the high RPMs, though. Anyone running their 383 to 6500 RPM?
If your smart for the same cost you can build a 3.875 X 4.030 = 395.7 ci. Let your cam and intake determine your Max rpm. 7500 for a 383 is very easy and the 396 ci 7000 without any problems.
As stated above, your cam along with valve springs & induction will determine best rpm. Mine runs best when shifted @ 6500 rpm .....(375 HP at rear wheels).
