how hot is too hot?

I tell you something I have fought on various cars over the years,....the diameter of the t stat opening, should be the largest you can find....typical 160f stats have a larger opening, and actually run about 180f.....go figger....stats sold as 180+ today have a smaller opening,
another thing, if on the freeways in warm weather you run normal then get off the freeway and it gets hot even with the fans on.....check the fans...you may have a dead spot in the armature and yeh, they run but not well, you have weak airflow....it's what happened to me....
this may sound a bit off the wall, but I can assure you, it's happened to me,.....
