Default Leaky tank

I found a gas leak coming right from the tank. I pulled the spare and the carrier off and it looks like the tank support has worn a hole into the tank. Tomorrow I am going to pull the tank and look it over. Does anyone have any advice in pulling the tank, any headaches that are ahead of me and the best place to get a new tank? Thanks

I found a new (repo) unit on E-Stink for about $165. There are several supporting vendors selling same.

Pulling the tank is easy...I see you have a '74 also. When lowering the tank, be careful of the anti-siphon valve (top driver's side). Don't break it!

Installing takes a little more time/patience.

Not a major job.

Also, it's easier if you have as much gas as possible removed to make the tank it's lightest(also safer ).

You can use "roofing tar paper" cut down to size to replicate the "anti-rub", "anti-squeak" pads. There might not be much left of your originals. You also may want to clean/scrape any loose rust/dirt/rocks off of the mounting areas.

thanks guys! I got the tank almost empty last night and I hit the bolt with a wire brush and then some WD40 so I think I am ready to go.

Found the same thing wrong with mine just when I got it all put back together after it being apart for over a year for paint and interior. Talk about aggrivating. It was a newer tank, but no one ever put the rub strips down and the tank was worn through by the tank support. I found some old tar paper, like mentioned above and put two strips under the tand and one strip along each of the straps across the tank. Good luck with it.

Update! I got the new tank in yesterday. Man I felt like I had really accomplished something and felt that the whole day was worth it. Until I was out driving tonight and parked the car, went into Hollywood video, came out, and saw a huge puddle in the same place that is was leaking from! Talk about making you feel like you wasted a whole day on nothing!

It turns out the only part that we didn't replace also had a leak in it. The little black box that is mounted to the driver side of the tank. I believe it is a fuel vapor seperator or something of that sort. So now I have to pull the tank again and get a new black box, which I can't find, and replace it.

So does anyone know where I can get a new fuel vapor seperator?

Thanks
Dan

I don't believe anyone sells these - if you find one, be sure to let me know.
