Cruise control, the transducer or the whole assembly???
Full of questions today. My speedometer quit working my 81 along with the cruis control and I pulled the cable from speedo spun it and the needle moves on the speedometer. So guage and cable to speedometer are good. I am assuming my transducer is bad and noticed in the catalogs that most only sell the transducer and not the vacuum assembly that it mounts to. How do I know if I should change the whole assembly and not just the transducer???

Mark

Pull the cable from the tranny and inspect, look for a rounded off end. If it checks out fine, use a small drill to turn the cable, if the speedo moves the driven gear is broken or the drive gear clip is gone, if it doesn't move then the transducer is the culprit.

These things can wear, which may have caused your cable to break off at the cruise unit.
I just replaced my lower speedo cable ($12) and complete cruise control transducer assembly ($99) and now my speedo works as smooth as the day it was new.
You can order a rebuilt cruise control unit from your local auto parts store. It will be of the same quality of the rebuilds from the corvette catalog houses IMHO and $20 less ($59 + $20 core).
It can be tricky to get the cruise unit out of the fender area. Lube the cable end areas.
Good luck
