Default New Owner Question

Hello, I have just survived my first midlife crisis and purchased a 1982 Collector with 27000 original miles. I learned of this forum when another forum member pulled up beside me at a red light - thanks.

Except for one minor leaking rear shock (which the dealer replaced) and the alarm not working, the only problem is a vibration from the front speakers. If I put my hand on the speaker grill the vibration goes away. How do I remove the speaker grills? Any idea how to fix this? I bought a repair manual off eBay but it does not cover these problems.

Thanks

Hello,
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the purchase of your CE! I also own a CE and really enjoy driving it. I always loved the "shark" body Corvettes and particularly liked some of the special features that the CE has, like the alloy wheels and the rear hatch. A lot of the CE specific parts are now being reproduced, so getting parts is not the headache that it once was.
To answer your question about your front speakers, the grills are held in by "tabs" on their sides. If you shift the grill right or left it should lift off and allow you to get to the speaker. The speakers are held in place by four screws and are lifted out from the top. IMO, the speaker cones are probably shot and new speakers should solve your problem. My CE has the AM/FM cassette player and just for your info, the sound is poor at best. Many Vette owners end up putting aftermarket radios in because the OEM radios sound terrible.
Good luck with your Vette!
Regards,
Tom

Welcome to the madness! Enjoy your new ride and remember it's only a midlife crisis in the eyes of the jealous.

If they're the speakers in the dash they just pop (carefully!) off. Eliminating the rattle may be more difficult. Could be they've put aftermarket speakers that are a little larger in, could be warped, etc. Getting some thin foam adhesive-backed strip and putting it along the bottom edge of the grill where it meets the dash MIGHT help.

Congratulations.

Although I like the older 68-72 body styling a little better, the 82CE color and detailing is one of GM's best.

The other posts describe the speaker grille removal pretty well. There is no real trick to them. They just sit in place.

I have just done a complete stereo system upgrade on my 82CE so if you have any questions I'd be more than happy to respond.

Welcome to the Corvette forum, and enjoy your CE.

If you get the chance, be sure to get registered on the CE registry.

Hello and welcome.

For the questions about your speakers and speaker replacment, check out the Forum section on Audio and Electronics. That section can also help you find information about what the best replacement may be.
