Default New speedo cable install. Some help please.

My speedo never did work. I have pulled the cc unit out and today am putting in a 1 piece cable. I installed on the speedo and ran a drill from the other end. The speedo turned fine. I also pulled the gear in the transmission and inspected since the cc unit was froze and I was afraid it may have shredded the gear. It looked ok (and is red?). I am re-installing the gear but have a question. Should I be able to turn the gear in the transmission? I have an old cable attached and I can turn it from the outside. This doesn't seem right. I was able to do this before pulling it out too. Anyone know what gives?

Thx, Mark

Thanks for checking. It wouldn't make sense if it did I suppose. I found a picture and the gear should turn right off the speedo gear on the main shaft. When I install mine it turns freely so either there's a trick to getting it into the splines or the gear is wrong (assuming the speedo gear is OK). I will try to look inside with a light. Anyone have other ideas?

I was able to shine a light in the hole and I can see where the gear seats and that's where it is sitting. I didn't see anything to drive the driven gear . I felt around with my finger and nothing. It looks like the speedo gear is completely gone??? Looks like I'll have to pull the tail shaft.

I pulled the housing off the output shaft and the speedometer gear that goes around the output shaft which turns the driven gear where the cable plugs in has slid forward?? The gear looks OK and has a slot like there should be a keyway but there isn't a keyway on the output shaft. I went to the dealer to get the gear and it looks exactly like the one I took out. There must be something missing that holds the gear in place but I have no manual to reference. Can anyone help??

Thx, Mark

"to install plastic speedometer drive gear, position open end of retaining clip facing rear of out put shaft, Lube gear IDwith ATF. gently drive on gear with open end 1-1/4 wrench, make sure chamfered end of gear faces clip or gear may crack"

i don't see any mention of a keyed slot

some more..."speedometer drive gear- position the reatining clip for the speedometer drive gear in its hole in the output shaft. align the gear with the clip and push it onto the shaft. the stepped end of the gear faces the rear. If the gear won't seat all the way on the shaft warm it with a heat lanmp or hair dryer to ease installation. don't force it on because you may damage it. also don't heat the the gear in water it may affect the the nylon gears durability"

seems to me the retaining clip is your issue....

I had this happen to me after I rebuilt my motor. Somehow I let my cable get against my exhaust pipes and the cable froze up. When this happend the gear in the tranny jumped off of its mounting. I had to pull the tail shaft off the tranny and put the clip back into place and sliide the gear back up onto the clip. I think I have a few pics of it. Let me look.

Found them on a disc I have of pics. This is on a 4 speed but I am sure the gear is retained by the same technique.
Here is the retainer you will be looking for.

Here is the gear on the tranny output shaft and the hole the ear on the retainer goes in. The gear just slides up over and locks into place.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks very much for all the help both the manual instructions and the pics help immensely. It's the retaining clip that I am missing but of course I wasn't really sure what I was looking for. I have to run to a salvage yard today and see if I can find one.

Thanks Again, Mark

Bob, Eddie,
Guess what I found laying on top of the crossmember
Since Eddie described his situation I speculated that with the cc locked up the same thing occurred. The tailshaft housing sits right over the crossmember so when I pulled it the clip fell into a gap on top and since I didn't know what to look for, never noticed. Now I know what and how.
