getting sophisticated...
ok as you may know i've been replacing distributor springs trying to nail down my timing setting using kids to read out rpm #s and by the sound of the engine.....it just ain't working, so....i made a jumper to go from my tach lead on the distributor to the tach plug so that i could hook up by "old tune up multi meter"....and wouldn't you know all my previous readings are not exactly the same as when dad does them....oh well i'm getting really good at exploring every aspect of timing....heres my new test set up and i've learned to record every measurement....

Its a long time consuming job but advance timing on the road is next best thing to a dyno. U can set up full mech advance at the rpm u want just parked (with vac adv disconnected & plugged). But to get max power (with vac connected) u need to run in top gear up a long low grade hill. Keep installing lighter springs until u hear knock - then back off with next stronger spring. A knock sensor (MSD $150) sure would help and thats on my to do list.
Good luck Bob. cardo0
