Hi, guys...lost my speedometer today. Started to make noise before it went out, and bounced around for a while before it just stopped. I have never really done alot of work on the car and would really like to replace it myself if it isnt too hard.
Would somebody give me some advise on how hard it is to do? What tools are needed? Where is get a replacement cable? How long to do and how much stuff needs to be taken apart?

Thanks in advance,

what year car? and do you have cruise control.....its not hard and based on my 77 you should not need any particular tools the dash end slips in and the trans end has a collar that is threaded that holds it in place ...now the hard part is under the dash getting it to slip in....especially if you are a big guy its a real PITA not technically hard just hard to get at...if you have cruise control then two cables are involved. but still the hard spot is under the dash

you have two cables ....one from speedo to cruise control trans ducer below brake cylinder and one from there to the trans... is the cruise control working? if not you can repalce the two cables with one cable and by pass the transducer all together
On my 77 the transducer was bad and destroyed 2 cables before we caught it. I had been trying to save the cruise but finally gave up and took it out all togther and put in the 1 long cable. Like Bob said earlier the hardest part is getting to the speedometer end.
I ended up replacing only the lower speedo cable and the cruise control transducer under the hood.
The upper cable was just fine and the speedo works great.
Try removing the upper cable from the transducer and spin it counterclockwise to see if your speedo is moving. Have your trusty assistant look at the speedo while you move the cable.
This might save you a lot of unnecessary work under your dash etc.. if your speedo and upper cable are working fine.
Lower speedo cable $15 local auto store
Cruise unit $99 Mid America - would be less if you buy at your local auto store
