My Black 79 is currently sans motor and automatic. I have a low mileage 95 LT1 Firebird with a six speed. With the Firebird sacrificed, what other pieces are needed to make my Corvette an LT1 six speed car?
After a couple of days and many viewings, I expected someone to say something. I didn't know this was such a "rare" request. Do you know of anyone performing such a transplant before?
It's going to be somewhere between a TPI install and an LS1 install. Vettedan put an LT1 in his '76 and has some good info/pictures on his website. http://www.vetteworksonline.com/
you will probably have to use the shifter linkage from a vette, i think as far as the motor and computer go, that should work fine once transplanted properly.you will need the fuel pump in the tank.
as with many of this type project, you won't really know what you need till you start ripping, mike
It can be done. We had a forum dyno day in the fall and one of the guys there who is a forum member did it in his 68 or 69. Too bad I forget his name... He said he had it done by a guy that specializes in modding vettes here in Ontario. It was a stock setup other than sidepipes and he dyno'd 300 rwhp. Man did it sound great!
I think the motor mounts are the same. It'll now just be a matter of accessories (reverse flow cooling so you'll have to retain the stock serpentine most likely), wiring, and mounting the transmission. You'll probably need to make a new crossmember. Might need to mod the tunnel. Is that the ZF 6spd?
The cross member on the automatic cars is bolted in, not welded like the 4spd cars, so modifying it should be easier.
The Vetteworks LLC web site is pretty cool. I hadn't been there before. His 76 has an LT1 automatic in it and he says you need the serpentine system from the LT1 Corvette. I will study all he has on his Website. He also did an LS1 swap.

I did this swap on my 1980. It will fit the stock mounts. You do have to use the Vette accessory brackets. Hooker super comp headers fit decent but need a minor modification to the driver's side collector to clear the bellhousing. You will need to builld a custom mount for the clutch master cylinder and lengthen the line to the slave cylinder. Overall a very worthwhile swap.
I built a custom crossmember for mine out of 1"x3" rectangular tube and used the end mounts from the old one. The shifter hole center is about 4" forward of the end of the parking brake handle. The shift linkage on a T56 is all internal, just bolt the shifter to the trans. I will post pictures of some of the details soon since several have asked. I've just been real busy with the C4 rear suspension swap and other details. If you would like pictures of anything specific for an immediate project let me know.
Your wed site is pretty exciting. I have the 95 Firebird with LT1 six speed, but with a paint job, it is worth more than it would cost me for an LS1 six-speed combo. It seems that might be a better route!
Unforgiven1:
Was that cross member for an LT1 or LS1 swap, or is it the same with eather motor?
