Hi gang,
Where do I hook up the (orange) illumination wire on my '73.
Not entirely sure and any assistance would be great.
BTW, Alpine 9813.
Thanks a bunch!!!

Are you referring to the wire for the dimmer? From memory, the orange wire is for dimming the head unit. (could be wrong. Haven't done radio installs in many years.)
Your best bet would be to tie into the dash illumination wiring. That way, when you turn on the headlights, the radio illum will go on with the rest of the dash. I don't have a wiring diagram with me now, but I'm sure someone will chime in with the proper info.
Yes,
That is what I'm referring to, the wire that activates the dimmer in the CD player. I'm not sure if I can tie into the gray wires that run to the bulbs in the back of the dash, or do I need a different wire. I seem to think the gray wire(s) wouldn't work because of the varying or different voltages of the dash lights due to the rheostat at the headlight switch.
What wire have you used with success?
Thanks.

usually that wire is not hooked up on aftermarket stereos, but if you want it hooked up run it off the dimmer switch which is part of the headlight switch
Every time I ever hooked the dimmer wire up on an aftermarket head unit to the dimmer wire of a factory wire harness all I got is if I turned the headlights on the radio would start if I had the radio off. I always leave them both capped on the head unit and the harness.
I just put a Pioneer unit in my 73. The only two wires I hooked up was the 12 volts on all the time (yellow) and the 12 volts on when the key is on (red)Radio install . It did not come with a dimmer wire to hook up.

If it is a dimmer, cap it and don't use it. I've done countless stereos ( about $9,000 in my daily driver right now) and have rarely, if ever, used the dimmer.
