I am begining to build a mild street motor. I don't have a carb yet. Because I haven't found a decent used carb I am thinking of a new after market carb. I need a spreadbore style as I am going to use a GM intake. I guess that limits me to a Holley or a Demon. I have heard that Edelbrock no longer is offering their Q-Jet Carbs. I figure I need something in 650 CFM range. I am looking for comments so what do you think what has been your expirence? THANKS!
Holley 4175 is a direct replacement for the q-jets, if you want to go squarebore, alot of the aftermarket intakes will accept square or spreadbore carbs. I've got an Edelbrock 600 cfm, but I'm thinking of swapping to a Holley 670-750 as soon as I can afford to.
Don't limit yourself to just GM, an Edelbrock RPM is a great manifold, and it is squarebore, and less expensive to boot.
bought one few days ago. Said direct replace but...on my 80 L-48 I had to:
1) Bend fuel line out to make connection
2) Buy 1/8 npt to 1/4 adapter for the brake vacuum
3) Cut clearance off my throttle mount bracket
4) Ditch my ac solenoid and bracket and order Holley's version
Now the pluses. My engine hasn't run this good before. Even had my qjet rebuilt and tried a loaner carb but this one idles better. Tuning the mixture is a breeze too. So I am happy for now...btw I have to admit the qjet had more oomph at wot compared to this 4175 but I am not out to run fast, all stock here.
