I have a 1969 with the high performance 350 with 11:1 compression. I live in iowa so i am able to get the ethanol that has 89 octane. I was wondering if i can get away with using the ethanol gas with 104+ octane boost additive. I have run the engine on just straight 89 octane ethanol and it ran fine. no noises. Will the octane booster help me?
Octane boost is crap. Real tetraethyl lead will help, though. If you're actually running 11:1 (I doubt it), I sure wouldn't put 89 octane, ethanol or no, in it.
http://www.radford.edu/%7Ewkovarik/p...-----------imm running it in my car, i use 1 oz per gallon to make 101 octane...its $30.00 a gallon but since im not at my home computer i dont have the web site-if your interested e mail me at carlclub@comcast.net and when i get home i'll foward you his web site........remember its banned,,, so i would advise running a few tankfuls of plain premium unleaded before going thru emissions testing

If your car runs fine with low octane gas than stay with it. The lower the octane the more HP you will make as long as you can run the correct timing advance curve and not induce detonation.
I run 93 octane in my 350 with 9:1 CR. I would think with 11:1 ( ) that you would need to run the same since that's as high as it gets at normal pumps.
I have a '69 L46 car as well. I run 93 octane gas mixed with MaxLead2000. It runs great with the lead additive and no pinging. You can get it at www.maxlead2000.com.
When I was a kid (26 now) my dad had a 70 with a built 400ci motor with 11:1 compression. Thing would knock on premium fuel. I would think with 11:1 you would have to run race fuel or av gas. It depends on your altitude too. At higher elevation you can use lower octane.
If you're engine runs on 89 octane (assuming you have iron heads) you don't have anywhere in the neighborhood of 11:1. In N.Y. we can't have over 9.8 and run properly with iron heads. Thanks, Gary

THATS THE WEB SITE!!! NOW I DONT HAVE TO E MAIL IT TO YOU!
On Corvettefaq.com there's a posting that tells you how to make your own gasoline additive. The "octane boosters' in auto part stores that sell for $4 to $5 for a few ounces are really almost fraudulent. They are basically just tolulene or zylene. You can buy a gallon of tolulene or xylene for just a dollar or so more than the few ounces these additives sell for, (Don't know if I spelled tolulene or xylene correctly but i came close).
If you can get some tetraethyl lead to add to your gas that's great, but once you add the lead, I think you should also add tolulene or xylene to l really boost octane. You can buy the tolulene and xylene at hardware stores.
I used to buy Av Gas for my L88. It had 12.5:1 compression ratio stock. I milled the pistons down 0.1 inches to lower the compression ratio to 11.5:1. I mixed 5 gallons of AvGas to 15 gallons of premium pump gas.
