On our 68 327 there is what looks like a condenser attached to the mounting bracket for the ignition coil. There are no wires coming out of it but it looks like a single wire may have come out of it at one time.
Does anyone know what this is and what it was for?
It probably is a condensor. It's not uncommon. Your condensor is now under the distributor cap. I had a condensor wire break off on the freeway and had to use one of AAA tows to get home.

Radio noise suppressor?

The condensor (capacitor) the points system uses is inside the dist cap. I think that capacitor on the ouside of coil is only for radio supression? But not found on my '74. ZIP advertizes original replacements and Ecklers sell generic replacements $20.
Hope this helps. cardo0

Reason: labeling correction

It is definitely the radio static suppression capacitor. The ignition capacitor is under the distruibutor cap. Repos are available, but as you are finding out, the car runs without it and the radio plays without it.
