BB 69. bushings worn out on distributor. Any suggestions or help with re-building it. Re-build or replace with pertronix or accel HEI kit. I want to maintain original look and want to keep my braided wires. I saw a post that states you can get just as good performance from points as the kits give (Lars). Yes? Is a re-build fairly simple.
Hello,
I rebuilt mine and it was pretty easy. I decided to do this when I started looking for a mechanical tach drive HEI unit. Those were too expensive for me.
I needed a new distributor main drive shaft and the tach drive cross gear. To get these out meant to take the distributor apart. By paying attention to the bushings and shims that come out, and writing down the order, I was able to clean, degrease, add new lubricant and assemble the distributor. I checked the vac advance cannister, and put everything back together. I started up on the first fire.
I thought it was pretty easy to do overall. Just pay attention to where your rotor cap is facing BEFORE you pull that distributor out or you may have problems getting the correct postion back in for proper alignment and timing.
I rebuilt mine with new mainshaft, mainshaft bushings & cross gear got everything from Mid America including the bushing installation tool very reasonable costs. Mid America sells most of what you need in kits. I also installed the pertronix pointless system. Very happy with the entire set up. I agree the point system will perform adequately but not as reliable or as maintenance free as the pertronix system .
