Default '68 Speedometer Question

The needle broke off in my speedometer.

So I purchased a new needle, but when I tried to remove what was left of the old needle, I broke the metal stem that it sits on. So obviously I can't put the new needle on anymore and my speedometer is screwed.

I have been looking at new speedometers on various websites and they run from $240 - $270. I really don't want to pay that much.

There are several used speedometers on Ebay but none from a '68. There are ones from a '69, '71, and '74. From what I can tell from the pictures, they all look the same.

Can someone please tell me what speedometers (if any) are the same as a '68? Will a '69, '71, or '74 work?

Or should I send my speedometer to one of those restoration places and do it that way?

I appreciate any help. I am new to all of this.

I believe 68 is unique because it has the threaded connection on the rear. I actually have one sitting on my work bench that I bought for the face off of ebay. If your interested in one at a reasonable price I can email you pictures.

E-mail this guy (he's a forum member, name is Jason, but I can't remember his username). He helped me with my '68 speedo last year, and he can rebuild yours for a lot less than a new (or probably even a used).

If I understand you correctly, you don't need an entire speedometer; all you need is a replacement speedo head.

Yes, I would prefer to just buy the speedometer mechanism alone if possible.

Are there any places that would have these available without the face, needle, and housing so that I can save some money?
