Default 4 speed shifter problem

The shifter on my '72 4 speed sometimes get stuck between reverse and 1st when going into reverse to get the keys out.
When it's stuck the transmission is actually in 1st but the shifter appears to be closer to reverse. I have to lay on the ground and shake the shifter rods to clear this problem.
Any idea as to whether this is a linkage problem or something more serious internal to the transmission?
Any ideas appreciated.
Thanks
72 350/4spd

I bet the shifting arms are not lined up, easy enough to adjust...if you have a service manual, the procedure is explained...if you don't have one, let me know, I'll type it out.
