Default Voodoo Cam?

I was thinking of ways to bump up my power a little more with out too much investment. There has been alot of talk about the new Voodoo line of camshafts and how innovative they are. I just called Lunati's Sales guy and Was asking him how the 60103 cam would work for my application compared to my old cam the Comp Magnum 270H. He just kept telling me all the good things about the voodoo and how superior it will be to the 270H. Will it boost my Power that much?? Enough to merit the $200 for the cam and lifters? The cam specs on the Voodoo is: dur @ .050 227/233 lift: .489/.504 LSA&ICL: 110/106. My old Cam the Comp 270H dur @ .050: 224/224 lift: 470/470 LSA: 110
For the everything else that matters in cam choice, I got a 700r4 with 3.55 rear 2200 stall, performer eps with 750 cfm carb and Headers. 10.2 compression with TFS alum heads. The heads only have 2000 miles on em and they have the big .600 inch lift springs on em so too much lift is not a concern. Whatta you guy think?
Thanks
-Tom

The designer at Lunati is Harold Brookshire who once ran Ultra-Dyne camshaft company. Point of trivia, Harold put Comp Cams into business with his "High Energy" designs. Comp Cams has some decent designers now but, there is still a "Black Magic" factor in cam design and I think Harold is one of the best in the world for a push rod design motor. Voodoo cams are Harold's latest designs after he went to work at Lunati about 18 months ago. I have a Ultra-Dyne cam in my 12.28sec@117MPH 72 LT-1 Vette (mainly used for Autocross and occasional street driving.) My friend owns a Automotive Machine shop and gets the best pricing from Comp Cams because of the $50K+ volume in business he does with them each year but, I will be looking at Lunati offerings when I build my next engine, Harold is that good of a cam designer, his stuff "ROCKS!"

That is the exact cam I'm going to run in my Vortec headed 383 going into our wagon project.

Harold Brookshire is the King Daddy when it comes to cam design. If you get a chance got to www.chevelles.com/forums/ and take a look in the performance section. His user name is UDHarold.
He is in there quite often answering questions and recommending cams for the guys there.
I'm currently running one of his Comp Cams designs (268H) in my Vortec headed 355 Z28 and it is absoultly amazing the amount of torque it makes.

I think it would be almost impossible to find a better cam designer. And the new Voodoo line looks to be his best effort yet.

I say go with it!

Default cam

I personally like that cam alot. He said on the chevelle forum that it made 25 more HP than the comp xe 268. He states that the cams have an aggresive opening ramp to them, but have a gentler closing ramp to keep the valve train noise down. If you go with this cam let us know , as my combo is very similar to yours and i was thinking of switching to this cam too.

Isn't Comp Cams Extreme Energy cam basically the same as Lunati's Voodoo? Anybody have problems with wiped lobes on the Voodoo?

I can vouch for Harold too. He personally helped me with a custom cam recommendation to work with my stock LS6 intake on my 496. Sounds good and makes great power through a wide rpm range. I bet the new Voo Doo stuff will run strong.

I just installed the 262/268 voodoo. Didn't have a wiped lobe but did have a lifter plunger fail at the end of break in. I ended up having to take out the entire cam for the warranty replacement. The cam itself broke in great.

By the way. . . I love your car, Tumarr. I've always had a weak spot for black '79s and yours is one of the finest I have seen.

He spent a total of about an hour on the phone w/ me during 3 conversations helping me select my cam, educating me about cam design, & just telling good ole stories. He's the man & a very nice guy too. I think he's been very busy since he went to Lunati so I doubt he's got as much time to spend on the phone but if you get a chance to talk to him there's no doubt you'll learn something.

I would do a little more digging for something with more lift. Lift doesn't hurt driveability at all and with your aftermarket heads you're giving up a lot of potential keeping lift under .500. I think you could get out in the .550-.575 at least range with no issues

Harold definitely knows his stuff and has always ground non-symetrical cams with fast opening/slow closing lobes. They work well! The cam you are looking at has a 108 LSA, so it will likely pull harder at low and midrange, but it will also be a little "lumpier" than your old one. I'm sure you'll pick up power..but I'd keep looking for one better suited.

See if you can find something similar but with more lift.

Well I already am running 1.6 ratio roller rockers so that bumps my magnum up to .500 lift. I could still use my 1.6 rockers or I already have a set of 1.5s too. I liked the manners of my 270h magnum cam but can tolerate some more lope and chop. I am alittle conserned with lift past .550 because the block was decked and the valve might be getting too close to the pistons. I did a clay test with the old cam when I was assembling the motor. From that, I am making the call. A cam with more lift but not too much more duration, I would probably need to be looking at hydrallic rollers or solid roller cams. That would be great but I dont have that kind of money at the moment for retrofit rollers and steel cams. I will post my results once I do the swap though.

P.s. I was also thinking of using Rhoads Lifters with my new cam. Anyone ever use em? I like the fact that they claim to give 25% more low end torque and a higher vacuum. With our C-3s we need all the vacuum we can get for the headlights and such.

So with 1.6 ratio rockers the lift will be .521/.536. Thats pretty good I think with duration @.050 227/233.
