The vacuum relief in the radiator cap has failed. It lets air in the system when it cools. Either that or your overflow reservoir isn't vented. Depends on the year of your car.

hmm? I just remembered, I put a plug in the overflow tube while taking the radiator out and putting it back in...suppose this is the culprit?
Top hose shouldn't need a spring, this is for the bottom hose since it is the suction side of the water pump. I also assume it collapses after the motor is shut off and cools down?

nope...didn't notice the bottom hose collapsed...just the top one
How about an air pocket. A friend had air in his system for almost a year till he "burped it".
With the engine cool take of the top radiator hose from the engine side and make sure it is full of coolant. I have seen people who have put a filler/thermostat fitting that allows the coolant to be topped up righ at the engine. This also makes sure that all air gets out.
May also be a stuck thermostat.
If the pump is sucking through the radiator and there is air at the top then is sort of makes sense that if the thermostat is stuck that the top hose will "collapse" as you have pressure on the bottom but no flow at the top.
I wasn't real clear in my last post. What I meant was I suppose the TOP hose collapses after the engine is run and then cools off. And I agree with everyone above saying there is an air pocket somewhere, air expands when engine warms up and contracts when cooled down. This is complicated by the fact your vent is plugged off.
