What happens when the cable breaks? I thought mine went bad, so I got a new one, but after taking the old one out, I am not sure if I misdiagnosed the problem. Here is a picture of the cable I just took out.
Does the metal cable actually "break" when it fails? What else could have failed? I have a 1978 auto with cruise, and could hear, not quite a grinding, but friction when the car was moving, from behind the dash before the gauge stopped working.
Help please,
Thanks in advance,
Alex
If you have cruise it is usually the cruise unit that locks up and breaks the lower cable. Check and see if the cruise unit is locked up. Check the lower cable for a break in a plastic end or cable ,or a broken driven speedo gear in the transmission.
the cable that you are showing does not look bad ,but the tips can be bad .78-82 vettes have two cables .one from the trans to the c-c tranducer, this is the one that goes bad most of the time .the other one goes from c-c transducer to speedo head .one of the major reasons for failure on the lower cable is the c-c transducer locks up.this can be taken apart ,and freed up in side ,the cruise control will not work but you will have speedo .check lower cable and see if the c-c transducer turns freely.
Actually I think the cable just came away from the back of the speedometer. I just rehooked it up and took it for a spin and it works fine now.
Back is killing me now.
