Default Hood Clearance

I just put an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and BG Speed demon on my '77. I need to get a different air cleaner because of hood clearance.

Who else has this setup and what air cleaner are you using?

What size filter?

I was running a Speed Demon 750 on a Perf RPM with the small 2 1/4" air cleaner. The filter was sitting on one of those cheap Holley/Edelbrock drop base filter bases. I also used a K&N Xstream lid and had about 1/4" or less clearance to hood.

My '77 has the RPM Air-Gap with a BG Mighty Demon on it. I also have a 1/2" spacer. Mine has a K&N drop base air cleaner with a 3" air filter and it leaves me with 1/2" hood clearance.

Depending on if you live in the metro area I could try and meet up with you sometime this weekend so you could try mine out to double check fit.

Feel free to e-mail me direct if interested.

Jeff

I had to go to the Edelbrock triangular air cleaner in my pictures. Its not the coolest but it clears the hood.

I have the Edelbrock 14" drop base with a 3" filter now and there is no way I can get the hood closed. Does the K&N drop more then the Edelbrock?

Here's the cheapest solution:

Advance Auto Parts sells a Holley 14 inch filter assembly.. It comes with a 1 1/4 inch drop base. Cost is about $30 or so...
Throw away the 3 inch paper filter that comes with it and get a 2 1/4 inch K&N filter.. That way, you could even run a 1/2 inch spacer on the performer RPM and still fit it under the hood..

My '69 has a different hood than a '77, but I was told by an engine builder that GM made a drop base that was lower than the new chrome after market stuff. Anyone ever heard of such a beast? Might make life easer on all of us if true. I remember he told me it was painted black, and came on some 60's chevys.
