Lars,
Please see this thread.

It's my 406 pinging thread. I think I need richer jets in my q-jet primaries. Details are in that thread.

What carb number do you have and what size jets and rods are in there now?

I'll have to get a hold of JET and ask them what they put in it. The primaries measure .0025 on the tip and .0039 on the next larger step. I didn't see anything on them that looked like a number. I do think I may have gotten my lean cruise situation straightened out by adjusting the adjustable part throttle screw. It looks to me now like the carb is fine. I was just searching more from my pinging 406 thread.

Check the main jet size that's matched up with those 39 rods. Cruise and WOT mixture will have a significant effect on detonation. I believe even the JET carbs still have the GM part number stamped into the side... or is this a JET reworked Edelbrock carb..? If so, which Edelbrock carb number is it?

I need to get the carb number tonight when I get home from work. Here is the email reply from JET on rod and jet size.

Most common is:
74 jet with 41k rods.
or if the 41k rod is out of stock:
73 jet with 40k rods.

I'll get the carb number tonight.

Here are the numbers off of the carb.
