Default Oil Pan Removal

I need to replace the oil pan gasket but the steering arms are in the way of removing the oil pan.

How do I remove the streering so I can get the oil pan out?

Take the castle nuts off the two joints on the passanger side and pop them loose...probably need to hammer a pickle fork between there, but they'll eventually break free. Then you'll have all the clearance in the world to drop the pan. Hope you got a Fel Pro 1-piece gasket...makes life so much easier and better.

Yup pickle fork and BFH, once it breaks lose you can pull down and forward giving the needed room to pull the pan. The 1-piecers are great.

BTW Have heard if you do not have headers you can unbolt the idler arm bracket from the frame, sounds easier than beating with the BFH.

YEP...Idler arm bracket from the frame, and pwr steering ram from the frame too. All swings down far enough to remove pan.

To remove the ps ram from the frame, are you talking about the 4 nuts holding the bracket? or pulling the ram out of the bracket? reason I ask is that I loosened the 4 bolts on the bracket and they are loose bolts, ie, dont appear welded to the inside of the frame...kinda concerns me...thanks.

Default oil pan removal

The four nuts you loosened that retain the power steering ram bracket should be attached to bolts that are retained from the factory installation having two of the bolts attached to one bracket and the other two attached to a similiar bracket. This is why the bolts don't turn when you tighten the nuts. The bolt brackets should not fall in the frame just removing the bracket. However you could run some coat hanger wire around them to keep them from being bumped up into the frame.

It works even with headers. That's how I did mine.

Just did mine last weekend. remove two bolts from the frame, and there is enough room to get the pan out.
