What was the stock clutch size in a 71 bb? What are the advantages/disadvantages to going bigger/smaller?

Stock was an 11" single disc 26 spline clutch. Not sure what you mean be "smaller" and "bigger"? Different diameter??? I don't think a 12" clutch fits in the bellhousing (could be wrong) although there is room on the flywheel. Flywheel was 14".

Stay with 11". You can get all kinds of clutches in 11". From stock replacement, to centerforces, McCleod, RAM, Hays etc. Personally I've had great results with dual-surface discs. Mine is from McCleod and has organic (like stock) on one side and kevlar on the other. Engages like a stock clutch, i.e smooth and no chatter, but holds the 550 ft-lbs of torque I'm making.

Two different size & style clutches were used for big block 454 in '71.

Second style was the rare MA-6 dual plate clutch, which uses two 10 inch discs. This clutch was used as standard equipment in the LS-6 engined 'vettes. It uses a special pressure plate, intermediary plate and special thinner flywheel as well.

Was the use of the dual plate ever confirmed? I've heard that most LS-6 cars came with a single plate although other sources state a dual plate was supposed to be used???

Never seen one in the flesh, but the GM manuals allude to this set up.

Exactly. The manuals listed them but I heard they were problematic in real life and GM substituted regular clutches on most (all???) LS-6's.

But that's all second hand so was curious if anyone knows for sure.
