Greetings! I've got a Jeb built 496 in a '70 with a Turbo hood with an Edelbrock Victor intake. I need to go to a Victor Jr. or an AirGap due to interference with the hood. Anybody out there got any experience with such a change? The hp rolls over at about 6600 rpm (526 rwhp). My gut says los up top won't be that severe, but that's an unintelligent guess. I don't really want the lower/midrange torque an AirGap would bring - can't handle what I've got now.
The air cleaner just touches the hood with the Victor - the Victor Jr. should be about 1/4 inch shorter. I had an AirGap on the previous BB - it fit easily - this is a tall hood.
That pic is a little dated. The current exhaust is not close to factory - but still side - The side pipes are actually 2 - 4 inch DynoMax mufflers cut and welded together - full headers with 3 inch mandrel bends to the side - I figure the exhaust is costing about 60-75 hp - I just like sidepipes!

Did you chassis dyno the motor with and without an air cleaner with the Air Gap? if not, you may be surprised. Unless the previous motor was very mild. With the current 500+ rwhp the hood (with air cleaner) will cause a restriction.
I have a 69 and tried everything with my 454, L-88 hood and an Air Gap. After cutting and fitting, etc, etc. The best I could do is -35 rwhp with the air cleaner on.

You can mill the intake carb pad to match the angle of Holley Strip Dominator. There are a couple of guys here with 540's that have done that and it seems to work fine. This lowers the front of carb similar to a stock intakes' angle.
RATT, I had a similar experience on the previous motor. It was more of a choke horn problem. I took the choke horn off and got most of the difference back. This engine has a Holley HP 950 - no choke horn - but, I've not tried with/without yet.

Yep as usual, great idea Jim. I knew that too. I wish I would have said it first
