I recently am trying to bypass my cruise and get my speedometer working again on my 1982. I got the longer cable for an 82 without cruise. The problem I have is getting the tranny end of the speedometer fitting started. There is not enough space to turn the nut, and I really don't want to tear out the crossmember because the emergency brake braces and cable attached to it. Is there an better way to do this? What are your experiences?
Thanks for any help!
Been in this position myself lately. What I found to work the best was to push in on the cable while trying to line the nut up squarely and then use a long screw driver to start and turn the nut til it can't be turned with the screw driver any more. (thats probably a run on sentence). I then used a pair of channel locks to tighten it on up. Worked pretty good for me. Good luck.
I know what you are talking about. It is not easy to get at. There's the exhaust and the cross member in the way. I had to change speedo gears and just bit the bullet and dropped the cross-member. My 82 didn't have much rust on the bolts and it was pretty easy. I probably spent more time trying to figuring a way around it than actually doing it. If the bolts aren't too rusty, its not that bad.
Thanks for the quick reply. I am going to have to go with removing the crossmember route. I can't get it lined up straight pushing on the cable, everything is too close. Is it 6 bolts to take the crossmember out and about how long did it take. This looks like what tomorrow has in store. Then the next job is the dreaded heater core! Lots of fun.
Thanks again,
John
I just did this and was able to reach my hand up in there and start turning it.
Scraped the sh*t out of my hand though, but didnt have to drop the crossmember. Make sure the threads are as clean as possible as this makes the turnig much easier.
I went out this morning with the intention of taking out the cross member, but I thought I would give it one last go. I cleaned all the threads with carb cleaner and and I had the front up on ramps and a jack under the one side, and it seemed to give a little more hand room up there, anyway I got it started and tightned it up with a screwdriver. Thanks again for all the help! Now to the heater core. any comments on the 82 getting it out???
