Default Electric Fans ~ Sensor Installation

I am thinking of putting electric cooling fans on my '70 BB. I've never installed any before and was wondering what you do about the temperature sensor placement? Where does it go?

Thanks!

Don't buy the cheapest kit you can find. I did and now have problems. First the temp sender on it quit working (was the type you slide in the radiator fins), then the relay quit working.

I'm sure a quality setup from Painless or someone would work much better,

I just pulled a "Quality" Painless setup off my car the temp sensor went bad after 1 season of driving, I also had problems with the relay. I wired my dual Flexalites with a toggle switch off of the alt to inside the car, now everything works when i need it.

your right side head has a plug for temp sensor...that's where you want to place the fan's sensor..

WOW! You just saved me a LOT of headaches as I was considering that direction! Thanks!

I got one for my Dual-Spal setup on my '74 BB that goes into the top of the thermostat housing, it works like a champ. Hook the ground wire of the second relay to it, one fan runs all the time, the other comes on at 190, and goes off at 180, when the sending unit in the thermostat housing closes the circuit at 190.

Only problem I'm running into now, that I didn't consider at first, is that the dual fans, my radio, my electric fuel pump, etc. etc. are over-taxing my stock alternator (42Amp, I think), the fans alone are like 30 or 40 amps. So, I'm upgrading to an 80Amp alt.

Good luck!

David

I also decided to bypass the temp sensor for my DeWitts aluminum/dual 11" spals kit. I wired each fan seperately to its own toggle switch because alot of the time you don't need both fans running. This helps reduce the load on the alternator too. good luck...

I first put the sensor in the right side head. I soon found that the headers were affecting the temp sensor. Then I put it in the intake manifold and all has been well.

Good point. I'm about to do this and never thought of header heat.
