Anyone have any experience with converting a mechanical tach to an electronic one? I have a 73 coupe that the previous owner swapped over to an HEI distributor with no mechanical output for the tach. What's it take to get the tach working again? Were all the later C3's mechanical cable driven also?
I'm sure someone's done the conversion but I would guess you would be better off with one of these. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW
Less hassle to install plus you never have to deal with a bad tach card.

But, I have a 75 electric tach and a 71 cable/mechanical tach for sale if you want to swap the face over and plug in the electric. PM me or email at srh31@aol.com
Hmm, that's right, I forgot that I'd have to switch out the face of the tach to go electronic. I'd like to keep the interior gauges consistent. I suppose I'll be looking into a new distributor then. Thanks for the help!
Patience,
I have a '74 and can confirm that this is the last year that mechanical tachos were fitted to Corvettes. In 1975, GM went to the HEI and all tacho equipped cars had electrical tachos fitted. My car had a '75 engine fitted (with HEI!) but I bought a Mechanical tach drive HEI distributor for it and used the '75's rotor, cap (with coil) and wires and it runs fine. Cost me AU$350, but should be a lot cheaper over there.
