I just got the car running tonight and was trying to set the timing and it is now heating up to 250 deg in a big hurry. This car ran at about 180 deg. before this. The side pipes even started smoking. Here is what has been done.
1) New water pump belt...original seemed to long and had a lot of play
2) New ignition components... Cap, Rotor, Ignitor 2 flame thrower 2,
Usually when a water pump goes they start leaking right, or will the impellers ever fail?
Check the obvious. If it got there in a real hurry, you have something blocking the flow. Assuming that the cooling system is filled all of the way, I would check the thermostat right away.
If it looks good, make sure you have water flowing through both hoses.
Some of the time, rapid temperature rise means the thermostat is stuck.Just change it to be sure. They are cheap.Assuming of course, you have already checked for leaks, and you can see coolant in the filler neck of your radiator when it is cold.
did you plug the vacuum line that was attached to the vac advance?A large vacuum leak can cause that as well. Also, make sure the timing has enough advance.
