what intake and carb setups will fit under the stock hood on my 81? I was thinking of an Edelbrock performer with a holley dual feed 650. the car does have a nitrous setup so there is a 1/2 inch spacer under the carb for the nitrous. all emission controls will be removed. thanks

Default intake and carb

I have a rpm air gap with a holley street advenger on a 82. It fit under the hood with a low profile air cleaner. I used one of the new air cleaners with the filtered top. A 82 hood is a little different from yours. It has some meat inside to fit around the air cleaner. I had to trim some of that off to make it work.

Got any pics of your air gap and carb on the engine, I'm thinking of installing an air gap manifold with my speed demon with a low profile air cleaner, I'm pretty sure it will fit under a stock 73 hood.....

performer with a holley dual feed 650 will work, so will the RPM with a drop base air cleaner.

I'm going for the RPM air gap with my 650 Speed Demon. It's the same height as my current manifold - performer RPM

Looks a nice install. I always worry about that type of air cleaner, I heard that they can be a fire hazard.

Ditto on the fire hazard, also can be a carb hazard...buddy of mine installed one, installed the dist. backwards (180 degrees off) backfired through the carb, and then he spent the next 2 months with an ice pick removing all the nice melted foam...moral of the story, talk to lars before installing a dist.

You're quite right on that air cleaner. That foam catches on fire very easily. Threw mine right in the garbage.

I'm putting a new engine in my 74. I put vortec heads on it. I called Edlebrock to see what intake to use. They told me that they couldn't guarantee that any of their intakes would clear my stock hood. Anyone else tried it on a 74? How much difference is there in hood designs?

I've never heard that about the foam air cleaner being a fire hazard. I've had this one for about 4 years now without a problem. Maybe I'll have to re-think my set up.

I just put on a Edelbrock Performer RPM and a 575 Speed Demon with a drop base air cleaner on my '77. Seems to fit fine.

Victor Jr., RPMs (incl. Vortec) & others will work fine w/ the 73-79 med. rise hood & aftermarket drop base air filter.

I've run the Performer intake with a drop base air filter and a 4" element with minor rubbing as a test.Ended up going with a 3" element. I used the same 3" element with an RPM intake with no clearance issues, and now run with a Vic. Jr.,all under the stock 80 hood.
