Found under the radio of a 69 BB car a silver tube about 1 1/2" long with what appears to be an eye or light in one end, wired with a single grey wire into the wire harness, appears to be original with no wire splices, what is it

It's part of your fiber optic lighting on your console.

I agree. Seems like it snaps into the side of the socket that the cigarette lighter goes into.

I just installed a new dash harness on my 71'. All the dash lights have a single grey wire. Idiot lights have other colors, so it sounds like it came unplugged from the back of either the Tach or center gage cluster. Best bet is center gage cluster.

If memory serves, there is no courtesy light on the ashtray, but the lighter is lit. Lamp and housing clip on to the side of the lighter. Gray wire indicates instrument illumination.
