Default Help - How does the 69 side pipe covers attach

We just got side pipe covers off e-bay for our 69. They are in three pieces each side. I expected the center cover to have a flange on top so it would screw into the holes where the rocker molding attached. Instead there are no flanges. Does anyone have pictures on how these attach or can describe what we are missing

Well it sounds like you have the out coverings only. You're missing the inside insulator to which the pieces you have attach. The 3 pieces, each side, are essentially held together with the one piece insulator.

The insulator has the little lip which bolts or screws to the rocker area.

Here are a couple pics I found. These are not mine but should give you an idea.

This shows the side that faces the exhaust pipes

This is the outer side.

See the holes in the center of the tip? That's how the outer piece attaches to the insulator, in addition to one end forming a slip-type fit. New, the insulators are about $1,000. The factory covers do a remarkable job of dispersing the exhaust heat. Even after running my Vette for 45 min or so, the covers are just warm and you can touch them.

Look at the picture in my sig & site. You see the bolts/screw along the rocker are where the covers attach? Thats part of the insulator, I painted mine hi-temp flat black and used SS screws to attach to the rockers.

Thanks Jughead

That explains it well. Are those made of sheet metal or are they fiberglass? Any Idea where i can get a set?

Dude, did you use the search function? I had this exact same query a few weeks back! Jughead was kind enough to respond to that thread as well..with some very helpful info, as usual.
Where do you get them from? Well, from Ecklers, Paragon. but actually there is a recent thread for a group purchase of these.

JUGHEAD: Those are cool pictures of the insulators and also excellent descriptions...its given me a much better idea about the insulators now.
Top job dude

Just gotta talk my boyfriend into letting me have a $1000 to buy some! He likes the hooker side pipes but I much prefer the factory setup.

The prior owner of my car had the Hooker sidepipes on it when he bought it. He hated them. He said his wife would always burn her legs on them when she'd get out of the car.

Talk your boyfriend into the factory style pipes. Just saw a thread about a group purchase for factory correct side pipes for the complete set: pipes, covers and insulators. I think $1800 for all. A very good price.

Thanks LemansBlue68. Been keeping my eye on the group purchase thread. I think my boyfriend is a little concerned with the horsepower.
The original setup doesn't seem to add to the horsepower like the hooker setup and we have even heard the original setup seems to lose power? is that right?

Anyway, he knows Im keen on the originals...one day...have to start saving!

Supposedly Paragon has the orignal molds etc from GM for the covers and all the other retailers get their kits from Paragon.

Ecklers from what I heard has the molds for the GM hoods.

The outer shell of the covers is fiberglass, but as you can see there is a metal skelton. My insulations were slightly cracked in a couple areas and were easily repaired with a fiberglass patch kit.
