I never make any friends on this forum, cause I always suggest stock parts. I'd go to a junkyard and get a good used GM HEI. Then follow Lars' instructions on how to re-curve with springs/weights - maybe a better coil if your interested. I'll never see much RPM above 5 anyway, so stock coil is good for me.

Default shipping cost

Look at the web site for the CHEVROLET HEI with Mechanical Tach Drive you suggested

They want $91.34 for shipping, wondering if the guy is going to bring it directly to my house and put it in.

Doesn't this seem high for shipping

What is wrong with your old dist. A properly setup stock dist will work as well as any of the others out there. I am using my stock dist to fire a Crane HI6 box and it has proven very good to 7000 rpm. The reasong I went with CD ignition is I wanted a rev limiter and a little hotter spark. NO HP will be gained by going to an aftermarket dist. You can rebuild your stock one and it will work fine.

Default How it started.

It all started the other day retured home let of gas to pull into drive way and engine died, noticed tack quit, and would run well at all. Wouldn't idel, no power at low rpm and coughs and will backfire if goose it to fast a low rpm.

Unhooked mech. tack cable and it will spin the tack needle some assume problem in tack with stripped gear. No knowing but assumed it might also be affecting vacum advance causing carb problems.

Others suggest vacum leak, etc. Just thought if going to trouble of tackling problem a new dist. might be the better way to go, since I just bought the Vette and have little knowledge of how old the dist. is.

I know just enough to be dangerous when it comes to ignitions problems.

Diagnose the actual problem. You can throw A LOT of money at the car and still not fix it.

If you change from the mechanical tach to a HEI unit, then you will also have to replace the tachometer to match. Thats another added expense, and a reason to try and rebuild your current one.

Default mech tack

CHEVROLET HEI with Mechanical Tach Drive, I assumed this model would work with in dash factory tach, was I wrong to assume this.

That's true with a GM HEI, but the one he is looking at is a tach drive HEI.. This is the way to go..
