Is there any way to figure out what cam I have? It seems BIG. I recently aquired a nice 78 Pace car that has been modified. Here's what I know. 1.Big cam 2.Hooker headers true duals Turbo Mufflers 2.5 in. 4.11 rear diff. Had to set idle speed to about 800 -850 just to keep car from shaking side to side at stop. 3. TH 350 auto trans Shift kit. Had traction problems With Goodyear Tires All over the road smoke out. But B.F. Goodrich Give Excellent traction. What do you guy's think? Feedback????????????????? The original owner Has since passed on. I got it from dad who rarely drove the car and knows nouthing about it.

i don't think there is any way to tell your cam type/specifications short of taking it out and hoping that there is some indication on it of make/model.....i doubt this will even be helpful.
If all you want is the the lift and duration, purchase a degee wheel and dial indicator. It will get you close to what the original specs were minus any wear.

Could be the original L82 cam. It's not the cam that causes problems at idle, it's the torque converter. Before I changed trannys (and converters), I had to keep my engine up over 1200+ rpm in neutral/800 drive idle due to the low stall speed of the stock converter...
on a 78 L82 (stick) the factory idle is like 900 rpm in neutral anyway - much lower than that and it shakes rattles and rolls....
Unfortunately not much info in your description to help you with....though if you are having significant traction issues then an L-82 cam it isnt they are not well known for anything resembling bottom end torque.
