I have a 1981 with the computer carb, can the controls cause it to run rich? are do they have that much control. it will smoke black when you get on it. it may just need an overhaul. what other carbs will work (non computer controlled) I eventually will put a mechanical distributor also.
The computer controls the primary mixture only. If it's smoking black when you get on it, it sounds like the secondaries are too rich -- or something is wrong over on the secondary side...
it can, find the book writen by Doug Roe, HP books it cover's them
This book is a great place to start. I'm not sure that's your problem though. There is a throttle position sensor that allows the carb to go full rich when you open it up anyways so I'm not sure that you can blame the smoke on th carb. (Oops. Sorry Page; you said the same thing while I was typing my response).
It takes a little learning to get good at working these computer M/C carbs but they work pretty well when you do.
Paul is right though. If you plan to replace it with a non-computer one and replace your distributor as well (you'll have to as removing the computer will remove your spark advance), then you have many choices. Remember though. If you remove the computer you'll lose most of the emmision controls and will make the car not smog legal in many states, especially CA. Make sure that you know your local smog rules before ripping these all out.
