My tach on the 73 stopped working. The cable is broken, but it's broken off in the tach drive gear. I'm sure the broken end is still in the distributor.
#1...How would I go about removing the broken end of the cable? (any special tools?...do I need to pull the distributor and do it on the bench?)
#2...What's involved with replacing the tach-cable. I know how it attaches to the tach-guage but do I need to remove anything under the dash to gain access.
The cable is a square drive... it drives the "cross shaft gear". The cross shaft gear rides in the "coupler" which screws into the distributor housing. I use a thick puty knife on edge to remove/install the coupler. It unscrews. The cross shaft gear comes out with the coupler when you unscrew it. The cross shaft gear mates with the distributor main shaft/gear. These gears commonly strip & have to be replaced. The cable comes off the tach, if I remember correctly, by squeezing the plastic connector.
Edit.... don't remember if anything has to be removed to gain access to the rear of the tach.
You will be able to remove the drive gear from the tach without pulling the tach out. Be carefull not to loose the tiny bushing if it is so equipped. Grease up the gear & cable end before install. Routing the cable through the firewall and clipping it onto the tach is possable without removing anything. NOT EASY...but possable. To make it easier to lay under there...I pull the seat.
