advancing cam with bushings
I've seen bushing kits etc for advancing/retarding the cam timing. What does this do, and how does it do it. Is this for high performance applications only? or something we all should do for easy/cheap power. I've read that advancing the cam timing will give more low end and middle torque.
First of all you have to have a cam and or crank timing gear set which is adjustable. Either by extra keyways or offset bushings.
If you have a program like DD2000 you can play with advancing and retarding the cam and you can see what it will do.
Without a two piece timing cover it's a PITA. If you have it torn down that far you might as well just go ahead and pull the intake and just install a better cam.
Just for the record i have installed my last 5-6 cams retarded because i wasn't concerned with low end power
Changing the cam's timing is just another way to fine tune the engine. There would have to a specific reason for it. Perhaps a vehicle maybe spending a little more time at lower rpms than anticipated or passing is more desireable coming off a turn than 3/4 ways down the straightaway. It's a way of trying to put more torque where it's needed. Give and Take.
