I need to time my 82 corvette but I cant seem to get it right.
Which wire do I disconnect from the distributor?
Also when I put the timing light on the degree key thing the chaulk marks are way off. So when I rotate the distributor the engine chugs and damn near dies.
So what am I doing wrong?
Could the chaulk marks be wrong? I wasnt the one who marked the balancer but how would you go about finding out if the marks are right?
i think that it is a brown or tan wire with a black stripe .its by the distributer on the drivers side . that has to be disconnected to give you a good reading .
Like Terry said, look for a brown or tan wire near the dist. on the drivers side....
Just the single bypass wire (brown wire with 2 locking-tab connector). When you start it up the CEL should turn on with an EST fault code...but of course will turn off once the bypass is reconnected.
Also, there's a good chance your harmonic balancer has slipped. They are known to do this, and the next step is when it comes flying off...
You are going to need to find TFC on #1 and see if the marks line up on the balancer, if not it's time to get a new one...
the wire that you need is not connected to the distributer. it goes to your computer .it will be by the distributer close to the firewall . you need to do this first, then check timeing .pull out no1 plug ,turn motor over till you have the piston at the top of its stroke ,you can use a long rod or screwdriver to check if its up.now check distributer to see if its pointing to number one .if its not turnover motor till it is pointing at number one .check piston again. if it is at the top of its stroke and the distributer is on number 1 . the balancer notch should be on zero or at least close . if it is not, the balancer has moved .before you turn over motor dissconnect the power wire from the distributer so that it can not start.
