Default Electric Choke Question

I got my new Crane Cams XR-I ignition modure hooked up and it's running great. The odd thing was that I hooked it up to the +12V lead going to the electric choke (Edelbrock 1406 carb) and it would not fire. When I disconnected the lead from the choke, it fired right up.

I'm thinking my choke may be bad. I couldn't find any info about troubleshooting these. I did put an ohm meter across the leads on the choke and got 12 ohms.

Any ideas?

not sure you have an issue there, i would imagine that ignition module will want some real power going to it. i bet the voltage drop across that line with the choke hooked up was simply too much and would not give you sufficient voltage to make the igniton module work. hook them both back up with seperate lines making sure you have the correct guage wire going to the ignition module and i bet you will be ok.

OK, I'll try that. Any way to check the operation of the choke while it's hot out? It's in the 100s here this week.

This is new to me since the only vehicles I've had with carbs were go-karts and quads. Even my first car (72 VW Squareback) had injection.

no not really that i can think of other then packing it in ice so the internal spring gets cold and then see what happens when the ignition gets turned on...i'm not sure how effective that would be it may just make a mess and you definitely would not do this on a hot engine....for now just make sure that it has the butterfly all the way open and when it gets cold outside in the fall start to play with it then

Spray it down with air in a can. That stuff is just 134a with a trigger.

Thanks for your help. I pulled it off, and see just how simple it is. One of these days I'll bring it in the house in front of an AC vent for a while, and then hook it up to a battery and see if it works.
