Default Tach problems

My tach works intermittently, is there a tach filter (or something else) that can be changed out on a 78 HEI ignition? Would that be the 1" long x 1/2" dia (approx) piece that is under the weight assembly?
BTW All connections appear to be tight.

Thanks

you have an electric tach that works off of an electrical signal....i would look at the wiring first...make sure you have no broken wire coming off of the Distributor cap....the filter could be mounted to the intake manifold and it would be about 3/4" x 1/2" cylinder and it would be an "electrical filter" like a capacitor or condenser, it would have a wire coming into it and out of it, probably brown an it would plug into the distributor cap, drivers side front plug. "that piece under the weight assembly" sound like you are talking about under the rotorcap....not sure what you are describing but it is not the filter, perhaps the control module???
its nothing in here....

I had a look at lunchtime, the piece I was referring to connects to the control module. It looks to be square in your picture. It hooks into the big plug onto the distributer, into the coil. Okay, that isn't the tach filter, but for curiosity, what is it?

There is a light brown wire that connects to the distributer cap, labelled tach... I didn't follow it into the wiring harness, but I'm sure there isn't a capacitor looking piece on my intake. I will follow the wire and look for it more after work.
