Default Front And Rear Spring Replacement

I'm an amateur mechanic with basic hand tools. I'm interested in changing the springs in my '75. I wish to achieve a lower/firmer ride, on both the front and rear.

I have never attempted this on a vette. It seems as if the rear will be relatively simple to change out. However, the front springs appear to be difficult to remove.

Any direction would be great.

Thanks,

Rob

I was in your shoes about a month ago. I did change out the rear spring with absolutely no problems. I replaced the rear shocks at the same time. Just take your time and it's a piece of cake. I'm now trying to figure out what to do on the front springs. I think that's a bit more than I want to tackle right now!

Don't sweat the rear spring, give it a try! If you have any questions or issues just get on the forum and you'll get the answers. This place is better than a shop manual.

The front springs are not that difficult at all. If they are the originals you will probably need a spring compresser as the originals are quite tall. The replacement springs are much shorter and do not require a spring compresser. Remove the shocks and sway bar links. Then loosen the lower ball joint nut a few turns. Then take a pickle fork and seperate the lower ball joint, the nut will keep it from coming all the way off. Support the lower control arm then remove the nut. Lower the arm down and the spring will come out. I can have both mine out in about an hour and back in and ready to go. Just be a little carefull as the spring compressed has a lot of energy. I have done many spring changes and never had one come out. Just use your head.

if you want a lower stance and firmer ride, get the springs that are equivalent to GM's F41 suspension....shorter thicker coils and a 7 lief rear...if you preferr a glass composite spring, many spring rates are available.
