Default Turn signal switch replacement

Good morning fellas (and gals).

Taking a look at replacing my turn signal switch on my '75 with tilt/telescopic. Emergency flashers work fine at all four lights and I have replaced the flasher unit (worth a shot at $2.50 ). Three questions:

1. Through my own research and checking out a few threads on this site, I am fairly certain that the problem is the switch. Anyone think differently? Should I get in the steering column and check it out before dropping $100 on a new switch?

2. Anyone replaced these things before? I have heard that there are about 10,000 parts inside the TT column - will this take more than an afternoon?

3. Anyone seen turn signal switches for a '75 with TT cheaper than this?

Thanks again.

Jay,

I'd like to hear your experiences since this is on my short list of jobs for my 76 with T&T. Any pointers and experiences would be very welcome. A couple of weeks ago, I flipped a coin and heads meant rebuilding the headlights first.

I'll keep you posted Gator. I've got three quick (hopefully) safety-related projects (seatbelts, turn signals, & mirrors) before I tackle vavle cover and oil pan gaskets. I'm pretty much an amateur, so I'm still naive enough to look forward to it.

Plus, Leak is going to eat up the SEC this year.

Jay,

I don't know whether Leak will tear it up this season, but people in Gatorville are hopeful after some disappointing seasons for the past couple of years. Valve cover gaskets were my first project. The previous owner wasn't too careful when putting them in and one corner was completely folded inside the cover. As you might imagine, I had a BIG oil leak all down that side of the motor and onto the headers.

You need two special tools to replace your turn signal switch. A steering wheel puller and the special bridge tool to compress the lock plate so the retainer c-clip can be removed.

You should also purchase the plastic c-clip retainer (GM #7808385) available from GM dealers and most Vette suppliers. You will most likely find that the retainer is very brittle and will break when you try and remove it. It is needed not only to secure the c-clip it also isolates the horn contact spring so the horn won't blow continually.

Here are the links to the disassembly and repair papers to replace the turn signal switch.
