Stock 350. I have two guages...the original in-dash and a manual under the hood.

I've heard that, if you run less than 190 or so you are not running to full potential, efficiency, and power, you are actually losing horsepower. Now my temp guage never goes above 165. I have a high flow water pump, mechanical and auxilary electric fan (I have to check, I think it's stuck on "always on"), and a vented hood and cowl air. I been thinking about going to a higher Tstat but then again I am also wondering if just the temp guage is off, and most of you should consider that to - 1- is the place where the temp sensor is located, between the first two spark plug holes on the drivers side, an accurate place to measure water temp? and 2 - most of you probably have an after market temp sensor, is it accurate? Even the stock unit has to have a built in tolerance of +/- 10% temperature measurement, which means it could be 20 degrees over or under what the actualy guage says. That's probably a reason the guage dial numbers themselves are so imprecise.

Enjoy the nice cool temps! Most complain about boiling eggs on their radiators.........

Do you have a picture of the manual guage under the hood? Or could you help explain how that's connected?

Do they both read the same ? Acutally a stock 350ci with your cooling setup may be overcooling it, I would step up the thermostat too

Default Electric fan Question??

Hello,
How is the electric fan wired in? switch? thermo-unit? hardwired?
If the fan is running all the time or turning on before the thermostat, it may not let the car warm up enough to have the thermostat open. Just a thought....
What do you think??
Thanks,
Joe

When my fan relay failed, I wired the fan to run all the time. The car ran too cold, and the engine would sputter a bit (probably a carb problem). Now that I've replaced the fan relay and added a 195* thermostat, it runs smoothly again.

I used the rear port on the passenger head for the sensor then tie-wrapped (Bubba'ed) the guage to one of the A/C hoses (passenger fender), facing up. Looks OK as its tucked out of the way.
