I got my 76 with a T10 4 speed last summer and it wouldn't shift to 2nd very well most of the time. I adjusted the linkage but it didn't do any good.
I though I might need a rebuild but I thought I would change the transmission grease first. When I drained it, it looked like "mud" coming out and stunk like ????. I filled it up with 80/90 weight lub and drove it a few days. It shifted better so I drained it again and refilled it again. It now shifts as good as new. I guess the grease was 28 years old. I've changed the differential lub since then and it smelled really bad also.
Changing the transmission lub might be just what you need.

Can you explain how you change the fluid, do you use a pump to drain the fluid and what is the proper refill quantity. My understanding is the trans is filled to the level of the drain plug.
