When I shut down my '75, it "diesels" or fires a few times after I have turned the key off. When I shut it off, the RPM's are high (between 1500-2000RPM). Recently my temperature guage quit working and I'm wondering it there might be something wrong with my water temperature that could relate to my high idle RPM's and "dieseling."

Why are you shutting it down with your foot still on the accelerator? If you're not doing that there is something wrong with the ignition, carburetor or both. Is the timing set right? Retarded timing will force you to raise the idle speed on the carburetor to keep the engine running. Is the choke adjusted correctly? Are there any vacuum leaks?
Since I started using a fuel additive called Max Lead 2000 on the recommendation of another CF member, it cut down the dieseling. Also gets rid of the major fumes and gives you some more power as well. You can buy it direct from the mfr., which you can find on the web if you do search on the name of the product.

if engine's been running rich for a long time you may have excessive carbonization in the cylinders which raises compression ratio and can cause dieseling problems.
