Default Timing

Put new distributor in and can't get car to fire up. Can anyone walk me through the procedure of establishing TDC on the #1 in the fire position and setting the distributor in the correct position. I have already set the engine to TDC and can see the head in the motor at the spark plug hole but i am a little confused after reading some of the other post about the #6 be ing the position also. My mark on the balancer lines up to 0 when the head in the 1 position is visible. Any and all help would be appreciated. Been tinkering with this F###ing thing since yesterday.
And if you could verify firing order for L82 that would be great

Hopefully, you see the piston and not the *head*....He's your problem.
Even assuming you can see the piston in #1 cylinder hole perfectly, you do not know whether your piston is at the top on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke. You can probably *assume* you are 180 degrees off if it won't fire, but you could have another problem or your timing could be way off. It's a pain, but remove #1 cylinder spark plug and have someone turn the crankshaft bolt with a big wrench. You can bump it with the starter, but I think it is easier to do by hand. Watch the timing mark come up to zero...in one revolution you will feel pressure try to push your finger out of the spark plug hole....one complete (180 degrees) revolution of the crank and when the mark is again at zero, you will not feel pressure as you will be on the exhaust stroke. Once you know when #1 cylinder is for sure on the compression stroke at TDC, see where the rotor is relative to #1 spark wire hole on the dist. cap. You want to be slightly before #1 at top dead center.

I think it is easier to pull the driver side valve cover and watch the intake and exhaust valve on #1 cylinder to know for sure which stroke you are on. Make sense?

firing order: 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2. If you remote starter, or another indivudual crank the engine while you place your finger in the #1
spark plug hole. you will be on the compression stroke when you feel air push against your finger. At that point, install distributor
with the rotor pointing toward the # 1 spark plug. For future reference, always mark #1 post on the distributor cap with a magic marker or on the base of the distrbutor. This will help in the installation of a new distributor. Others will chime in when they read your thread.

let me get this straight how about if i use a compression gauge and bumped the starter until i got compression on the #1 that would indicate to me that #1 is in the firing position correct if i backed it up to 8* from 0 then set the distributor to the one firing wire on the cap i should be in correct position after that i should put all the plugs back on in the following fire rotation 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 I am suggesting using a compression gauge because i have no one to help me with anything

compression gauge will work as well. at least you will know whether you are on the compression stroke or the exhaust

remove the distributor, shine a flashlight down the hole. You will see the oil pump shaft. Using a long , blade screwdriver...just turn the shaft to where you think it needs to be to fully accept the dist. while ending up with rotor pointing at #1 cylinder wire post on cap.
