I need HELP!! I have a 78 that I've done a good amount of work to the engine. The short block is stock, i've put in a new cam, timing chain, heads, intake manifold, carb, distributor, starting, torque convert, and powerglide.
Now there is a knocking coming from the front part of the engine. I first thought it was a lifter ticking or an exhaust leak at the headers, but then i had a friend help me listen and we determined it was coming from the front and if you put a screw driver on the water pump or on the timing chain cover it was really loud. It is not too noticeable at idle but when you give it gas it gets very noticeable. Anyway we figured the timing chain was loose so i took everything off to look at the timing chain and it is tight.
I know it's not the motor mounts (they have been replaced), It's not the bolts for the fan, I found that problem when i first put it back together with new bolts . I checked the balancer and it's not that.
Can't say for sure if it is the fuel pump or not, any way to check that with out putting everything back together?

Any ideas to what it can be????
At this point the safest is to recheck everything since you did so much work at one time. Could be improperly adjusted valves? Did you properly break in the cam?
I should mention that I did the engine work 2 winters ago. I replaced the trans with a powerglide last summer and this year it was running fine and the noise just started during a small road trip (90 miles). The last thing i did to it was install a line lock kit.
The heads came preassembled and I did follow the instructions to breaking in the cam, as hard as that was to do.
Oh one more thing, it has progressively gotten worst. I started out as a small tick and turned into a very noticeable clunking. It has me very worried since I did spend, in my mind, quite a bit of money rebuilding it.

It's pretty easy to drop the pan and check the rod bearings. If they are ok, you can rest easier. If not, perhaps you can get it replaced before damaging the crank.
Are you sure it's from the front? I had at one time a '76 vette with an automatic. Found out the noise was from one of the bolts which had backed out of the torque converter. It was banging around the bellhousing.
