Default 82 idles too high

My 82 idles around 1200 rpm. The manuals both say the idle isn't adjustable but this can't be right. Do any of you guys know how to adjust it down?

You probably have a vaccum leak, it is the most likely cause of a high idle.

It could also be a stuck or malfunctioning Idle Speed Controller on one of the throttle body.

The idle isn't adjustable, the minimum air setting however is but it's a tricky operation if you don't know what you're doing or why. If you want the full details I'll write it down (some hefty typing involved there ) but check for vac. leaks first, around lid, TB's, lights, brake booster but also AC controls (the switch w/ that white plastic part w/ holes & o rings can come apart and leak) Cruise control disengage switch (brake) and heater door controls.

The first thing I'd check is a vacuum leak as suggested above. I believe there are four main hoses coming off the intake manifold: PVC Valve/Vapor canister, headlights, brake booster, HVAC/cruise control. Pull one hose off at a time and block the vacuum port. If one (or more) causes a decrease in idle rpm you know that is the circuit that needs repair. If there is no difference, it may be a gasket leaking, a missing intake manifold bolt or leaking/defective IAC motor.

Thanks guys,

I've been playing on the top replacing rotten vacuum hoses so I guess I'll just stop by the store and buy a mile of vacuum pipe and change it all.

My 82 was idleing high also. Found a small broken hose near the driver's side fender well by the alternator. Replaced it and the idle came down but still not enough. Pretty sure the leaks are coming from the intake and or tb's. HTH

My 82 idled high as well. I replaced the Idle speed controller. The IAC motors on both TB's. And replaced the EGR valve and gasket. This lowered my idle, but still was a little erratic. It has since come to my attention that I have a small leak on the intake manifold itself. Gaskets soon to be replaced. The most amazing thing happened when I changed out the fuel pump this morning. The idle kicked back up and held steady at 900 RPMs and I lost any and all hesitation in the throttle. It was the most amazing difference in overall performance than any modification or parts replacement to date. Good Luck!

While I was changing a mountain of hoses I shot a little carb cleaner at the base of the throttle bodies and found massive leaks at both. I picked up new base gaskets today and the top ones will be here next week. Hopefully that will solve all my troubles.

If you remove the TB's from the lid you have to re-synchronise them, better start reading how that's done

TT
If you are not moving anything, why would you need to re-sync them babies (TBs ).

Is it due to moving the linkage bar between the TBs?

because you remove them from the lid and the new gaskets aren't the same exact thickness as the old ones, so the vertical pos. of the TBs relative to each other will change and it will have an impact on things. One could try to install them and see how it runs but it could be way off, the synchronising is a pretty precise setting.

If you hold the TB;s and move one vertical (or ven horizontal) in relation to the other you will see that the linkage will push one of either TB's open (depening on which one is at the stop screw)
